Members of Parliament salaries and allowances

The basic salary payable to an MP is $211,972 per annum.

The additional salary and any expense allowance per annum for a specified parliamentary officer holder is set out below.

Electorate allowance

The electorate allowance per annum is:

• if the electorate is less than 500 square kilometres: $47,716
• if the electorate is 500 square kilometres or more but less than 5,000 square kilometres: $51,808
• if the electorate is 5000 square kilometres or more: $57,160.

Parliamentary accommodation sitting allowance

The Tribunal's MP Guidelines specify eligibility criteria for claiming the parliamentary accommodation sitting allowance.

The parliamentary accommodation sitting allowance per annum for an eligible MP is:

• if the MP is the Premier: $56,401
• if the MP is the Deputy Premier: $49,351
• if the MP is any other Minister of the Crown, the Presiding or Deputy Presiding Officer, Cabinet Secretary, Leader or Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Leader or Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Leader or Deputy Leader of the Third Party: $42,298
• if the MP is none of the above: $28,201.

Motor vehicle allowance

The motor vehicle allowance per annum for an MP who does not elect to be provided with a motor vehicle under section 6(6) of the Parliamentary Salaries, Allowances and Superannuation Act 1968 (Vic) is:

• if the electorate is less than 5,000 square kilometres: $24,015
• if the electorate is 5,000 square kilometres or more: $36,184.

Travel allowance

The Tribunal's MP Guidelines specify eligibility criteria for claiming the travel allowance.

The maximum travel allowance per night for an MP is the travelling allowance rate set by the Commonwealth Remuneration Tribunal as the travel allowance for an overnight stay in commercial accommodation in a particular location.

If the MP is the Premier, Deputy Premier, other Minister of the Crown, Presiding Officer or the Leader of the Opposition, the maximum travel allowance payable is the travelling allowance rate for an office holder of the Parliament of the Commonwealth, as set by the Commonwealth Remuneration Tribunal.

Commercial transport allowance

The Tribunal's MP Guidelines specify eligibility criteria for claiming the commercial transport allowance.

The commercial transport allowance per annum for an MP is:

• if the electorate is less than 10,000 square kilometres: $5,372
• if the electorate is 10,000 square kilometres or more but less than 20,000 square kilometres: $11,787
• if the electorate is 20,000 square kilometres or more: $18,507

International travel allowance

The Tribunal's MP Guidelines specify eligibility criteria for claiming the international travel allowance.

The international travel allowance per annum for an MP is $11,410.

The Electorate Office and Communications Budget for an MP who is a Member of the Legislative Assembly is (to the nearest dollar) the sum of:

• total number of voters enrolled in Victoria (as last published by the Victorian Electoral Commission as at the last day of February of the previous financial year), divided by 88, multiplied by $1.03, multiplied by 1.085; and
• the total number of voters enrolled in the electoral district that the Member represents (as last published by the Victorian Electoral Commission as at the last day of February of the previous financial year) multiplied by $1.36, multiplied by 1.085.

The Electorate Office and Communications Budget for an MP who is a Member of the Legislative Council is (to the nearest dollar) the total number of voters enrolled in Victoria (as last published by the Victorian Electoral Commission as at the last day of February of the previous financial year), divided by 88, multiplied by $2.39, multiplied by 1.085.
